We all attended the same high school, Grosvenor Girls High on the Bluff, Durban. So we’ve known each other since 1975. Janet I’ve known since 1967! We started school together way back then! After leaving school and finding our own paths in life, we continued to keep in touch over the years by having regular school reunions. Believe it or not, there are about 30 of us who still keep in touch one way or another.
After committing to the walk, I went through moments where I wondered whether I needed my head read! I’m not half as active as I used to be in my youth, but my commitment to this adventure prompted me to dust my takkies off and start walking. I tried to walk every day and have to admit that it felt good to be out and about and I felt a small sense of achievement at actually motivating myself to get out there and do it. I worried that the longer distances would be a challenge. The last time I did a long distance walk of 22.5km was way back in 1978! The thought of exploring a new country, which from the photos we’d seen looked absolutely amazing is what kept me going. I also trusted my determination to see it through as it was for a good cause.
Even though it sometimes felt as if we had to make the decision to begin on a daily basis! When our resolve faltered, Sharon reminded us of her motto.
“Every Achievement Starts with the Decision to Begin”.
Our collective motto for the walk was:
“Walking to make a difference in a child’s life”
